Obake 2

Your goal is simple: eat all the pieces of fruit or vegetables in each round and avoid the enemy ghosts within a time limit. Eating 2 or 3 pieces at once will give you extra points.

Each round has different food items to eat, and there are several combinations of enemies, each moving in its own way. As you progress you will also come across poisonous mushrooms so be careful!

Persevere and you may reach the final screen!

Backstory

This is a remake of Obake, an MSX-BASIC game made by Kazuhisa Yoneyama and published in MSX Magazine in 1986. I thought the game was well made and quite fun so I decided to optimize it and add extra features, in an effort to push the limits of the humble MSX-BASIC. I hope you enjoy it!

Controls

• You ony need the cursor keys to move your ghost across the scren. A joystick in port 1 can also be used.
• You can use SPACE to cut short game transitions.
•  F1 will pause the game.

Formats and Compatibility

The game is provided in a 16K ROM file and it should work on all MSX systems, real or emulated, with additional colors shown when played on MSX2.

Also included is the regular BASIC version in CAS format (tape), which can be loaded simply with CLOAD. With this version you can press CTRL+STOP and take a look at the code, if you feel so inclined. The high scores will be preserved when you rerun the game!
